A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A FOOTBALLER

Sells Goalkeeping Academy are pleased to announce our new profile of how a professional goalkeeper lives his life. A day in the life of a footballer follows a professional player for a day highlighting from when he wakes up, to going training, to when he goes to bed.

SGA are pleased to interview our very own Director Andy Marshall, to give us a low down on how he spends his days. The Aston Villa goalkeeper will give us a in depth look at his daily routine.  For each day of the week Sells Goalkeeping Academy will chat with a professional keeper, who will describe in depth their daily routine.

Spend a Monday with Andy Marshall:

Monday is the start of a new week. Having played a game on Saturday, and having the Sunday resting at home with the family its back to work. Playing for Aston Villa, and living in Essex means staying away in the week for several days.

7:00am: I get up and get changed, being quiet not to wake my new born baby boy fast asleep. Feed the dog and then jump into my taxi that takes me to the train station.

7:43am: I get on the train to Birmingham International station, I drink my coffee and read the paper, relaxing listening to music.

8:53am: Arrive at Birmingham International Station and head over to Aston Villa training ground (Bodymoor Heath) with one of the other players in his car.

9:15am: arrive at the training ground, get changed and head upstairs to the canteen for breakfast.

9:45am: quick massage for Ten minutes and then into the gym to warm up on the bike, and then stretching on the mat.

10:30am: Out for training now. The manager gives us a quick chat for two minutes out on the pitch to let us know what we will be doing for the day. We spend about 25 minutes warming up with the goalkeeper coach, and then we join the rest of the players, doing some shooting drills and then finish with a small sided game.

12:00pm: Training ends and we all head inside. I go to the gym for 20 minutes weight training with a couple of the younger keepers, and then in for a massage and stretching, and finally into the Jacuzzi to relax the body.

13:15pm: Upstairs to the canteen for lunch, today I am having sweet and sour chicken with noodles, bottle of water and then a fruit salad. All the players are eating and watching sky sports on TV.

14:00pm: Most of the players have gone off home, just the injured players left working out and getting treatment for their injuries. I am off to a hotel for the evening. Taxi collects me and takes me to the hotel round the corner from the training ground. I spend the afternoon catching up on Academy work and then have a 30 minute sleep. Call the wife to make sure all is ok at home.

19:00pm: I get out of my hotel room and go for some dinner in the restaurant, sometimes I go out to different restaurants, but tonight I want to relax. Call the kids to wish them goodnight.

20:00pm: I finish my meal and watch TV in the hotel till about 10:00pm.

22:00pm: Get back to my room and then off to bed for the next days training. Final goodnight to my wife.
